Algolagnie

Algolagnie (Greek algos "pain" and lagneia "lust") is a clinical neologism of the late 19th century to describe the pleasure of inflicting and receiving pain stimuli. The term has been largely replaced by the synonymous term sadomasochism, the passive algolagnia is replaced by masochism, the active algolagnia by sadism. The passive aspect can also be described as algophilia (Greek philie "love"), pleasure pain or pain horniness, a rarely used term for masochism. Algomania (Greek mania "madness"), which describes the pathological desire for pain, goes beyond this term.

In the context of sexual medical diagnostics or psychoanalysis, algolagnia is understood, analogous to sadomasochism, to be in need of treatment if sexual satisfaction is difficult or seems impossible without corresponding practices and the person affected suffers from the corresponding pressure of suffering. Algolagy is listed as part of the group of personality and behavioral disorders as a sexual preference disorder in the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) under the key number F65.5
